Description
Work, work, work and more work - but I had to do this little picture for something at Epilogue. It's most unfortunate I didn't finish it in time for Exposé, but, ah well, can't have it all, eh?All done in photoshop 7, and painter 7, by the by
Anyway - it's part of my dark fairy tales project.
----
Mehach and Ereyon.
Tales speak of how Mehach, Goddess of Death, used to visit the world of Aii Chriaston in the past. She would herself step down from her ebony keep, and gently weave and coax souls from their discarded shells - and legends speak of how she, when gathering souls from a battlefield, met a wounded, but still breathing young man by the name of Ereyon.
Ereyon was beautiful in a way the Goddess had never seen before - she had seen beauty in Gods, but here, she saw beauty in life. In his pulse, in the beat of his heart, and she came to love him - and he came to love her.
She visited him every night, and every night they kissed. For nearly a year, they were together, but Ereyon had a secret he did not share with his mistress. Though her presence when she was with him was dimmed down - she was still Death, and she was slowly killing him. Rather than telling her, and losing what little time he had left with her, he kept quiet, and wasted away. Mehach was blinded by her love for him and suspected nothing until the day he actually died - and she felt his passing from her throne.
He did not come to her, though, as souls should. He clung to his grave and haunted the cemetery at night. Mehach called for him but he would not come - so she was forced to go down to him once again.
He did not want to go to the ebony keep, because he knew that then he would lose his memories and his love for her - he would lose what he had left. Haunting the cemetery, at least, would let him remember what they had shared.
Mehach spent the night in the graveyard, playing her harp - weaving patterns of his soul through her fingers, until, quiet as the wraith he was, he could no longer resist... and floated towards her, kissing her cheek - and she kissed him in return and thus stole his memories, and his love, and all that he once was... truly stealing his life before taking him back to the dark keep.
It is said that after this incident, after the tragic death of Ereyon, the Goddess of Death has never been seen on Aii Chriaston again.

This picture was puuuuure hell for me. I started out with a very vague idea of -her-. I knew what she'd look like, that she'd hold a harp, but that's about it - so I painted her... and she turned out like I wanted her to, but the ideas on what she should be part of were still not formed. So I doodled, and painted, and tried - and for every new setting and composition I attempted, I messed the image up more.
Then, snap, I knew just what the picture was about - and I painted her, slowly added him, detail by detail, but it still looked like crap. It wasn't until I started on the moon that I knew if the picture would work out at ALL or not.
It's been a labour of love, and I'm all giddy with the feeling of having worked -so- hard on something, and having it turn out the way part of me had wanted it to, all along - like tragedy, magic and beauty.
So, well, anyway - I blabber too much. Thank you everyone - I really appreciate your comments :]

But.
But, I fear that your choice of characters runs in a loop. It's too often these slightly anorexic androgens. How about a chubby angel? A horribly ugly ogre super model? A bearded lady? I can understand your choice of appearance for your characters - they're people everyone everywhere will like because they're asymmetric. You got the power, the magic and the tools to change minds. What stops you from doing it?
06/17/03 @950
Afraid I'm not interested in painting ogre models, chubby angels, or the likes, Peter. I paint what fascinates me - and what fascinates me is androgyny and a certain kind of appearance, at least in art. Like I've said before, I'll leave faces that fascinate other people, to other people. I paint things from my imaginary world, nothing else.
And you're wrong - not everyone likes them. I still receive a good deal of hatemail because I paint creatures and people that are genderless. People who call me all manners of name because I 'dare' to question the roles of our sexes.
I enjoy playing with views on genders and I'll continue to do exactly that. The moment I start painting things because someone else thinks I should, is the moment I should (and I've said this before) just plain stop what I'm doing. Sorry if you think I'm running in a loop. Personally, I think I'm running down a path of my own choice

The first words that came to my mouth when I saw this picture. I vividly depicts the story you have told at the bottom of it. I want you to know that this picture is truly an inspiration and the beauty of story through painting. In all my days have I never seen such a beautiful depicted story. The goddess of death looks so beautiful as well along with the fallen soldier. This is the greatest work I've ever seen (oops I said that already).

Truly facinating!

And, yes, I write the stories myself. I'd be somewhat iffed if someone else's name came up in the search engines ;] (which -has- happened, this chick ripped my stories the other week. I came down upon her like a murderous hippo-hawk).
Again, thank you
